How to Cut an Edgy Bob

Master stylist Sam Villa puts a mod twist on the traditional bob.

November, 2012 (New York, NY) - Gone are the triangular, bubble-shaped bobs of the '80s, today's bobs are soft and wispy with a narrow edgy translucence.

Sam Villa, Founding Partner of the Sam Villa® brand and Education Artistic Director for Redken 5th Avenue suggests collapsing the shape to bring it into NOW.

Here's how:

Start with taking a horizontal section at the parietal ridge around the head and isolate the top section of hair.

Then, elevate the entire bottom section vertically and cut it. This is the section that is creating the bulk, when it's elevated and cut, the edge falls short to long, which collapses the shape.

When finished, release the top layer of hair over and cit the perimeter to desired length.

This techniques helps to create the tighter shape, the edge also needs to be softened.

Villa offers two options for loosening the edge:

    1. Fan the section and point cut into the edge.
    2. Weave the thumb blade into a horizontal slice and softly close the blade and back cut, close the blade and back cut.

Even those clients that have been wearing a bob since the '80s will appreciate the amped up attitude of this new bob. See this technique on video: http://bit.ly/QiyFY9
