The Joico "Glam Squad's" Emmy Hits, Misses and How-Tos

Damien Carney, Beth Minardi, George Papanikolas, Sue Pemberton and Anthony Morrison Weigh In On The Celebs' Styles

For immediate release - Polished Hollywood glamour met casual style on the red carpet at the 2011 Emmy Awards in Hollywood, and Joico's style and color experts have summed up the best and worst. Among the standouts, say Damien Carney, Beth Minardi, George Papanikolas, Sue Pemberton and Anthony Morrison, were the fiery-haired Christina Hendricks; the retro-glam Evan Rachel Wood; the always chic Heidi Klum, Kate Winslet and Sofia Vergara; and Minka Kelly and Rachael Taylor of the new Charlie's Angels.

STYLE TRENDS
According to Joico International Creative Director Damien Carney, the overall feeling of the evening was practical, easy and understated, sometimes nearly DIY. "But everyone had a bit of polish," he adds, "whether the hair was worn up or down." For Joico Contributing Artist Anthony Morrison, the stars who embraced "old Hollywood glamour - like Winslet, Wood and Julia Stiles - made the strongest style impact. "They interpreted glamour in a way that was simple, elegant and well-done," Morrison notes. Joico Celebrity Colorist George Papanikolas admired the modern, soft, sexy updo worn by Padma Lakshmi and the retro "Barbie" ponytail sported by Brooke Burke. "Brooke's style was fun and playful," he notes. "It was a great fashion statement."

Evan Rachel Wood

“I love the dramatic curve in this hair shape,” comments Damien, “and the style, color and gleaming finish were perfect with her black dress. And a low side part always creates drama.” Here’s how Damien would re-create Wood’s sleek style:

1. Prep damp hair with Joico K-PAK Color Therapy Restorative Styling Oil for reflective shine. Concentrate the application on midlengths and ends and comb through for even distribution.

2. Blow dry hair to produce a smooth, sleek finish.

3. Mist hair with Joico Smooth Cure Thermal Styling Protectant.

4. Create a triangular shaped fringe section and clip.

5. Gather all remaining hair into a crisp bun at the nape.

6. Release the fringe and sub-divide. Wrap each subsection around a 1-inch curling iron, feeding the ends of the hair through the iron.

7. When hair cools, brush through the fringe with a Mason Pearson brush, and sculpt the waves into place.

8. Mist with Joico K-PAK Protective Hairspray.

Rachael Taylor

“This is a great haircut!” exclaims Anthony. “In the ads for the show, her hair is longer and darker, so when she showed up with this bob and lighter color it was truly unexpected.” The cut, says Anthony, is a classic, flawless, graduated bob with a long, side-sweeping fringe.

To create a chic finish, apply Joico Smooth Cure Leave - in Rescue Treatment--a concentrated, heat-activated treatment which mimics the results of a keratin straightener and replenishes lost protein--to damp hair.

Create a deep side parting and blow hair dry with a paddle brush to create a snug-fitting shape.

Mist hair with Smooth Cure Thermal Styling Protectant, re-section, and smooth strands with a flat iron.

Mist with Joico Design Collection Humidity Blocker to maintain smooth, frizz-free shine.

PADMA LAKSHIMI

“The goal with this style,” says George, “is to keep the hair as soft and touchable as possible.”

1. Apply Joico Body Luxe Design Foam to damp hair.

2. Blow dry with minimal tension (unless hair is frizzy), encouraging maximum volume and body at the roots.

3. With a 1-inch iron, set the hair in loose curls and clip into place. When hair cools, remove clips and loosen the curls.

4. Create a small ponytail at the back of the head—this will serve as the foundation.

5. Subdivide the remaining hair and begin draping each subsection back to the ponytail and securing in the tail. Continue until all hair is secure, keeping the tension minimal.

6. Mist with Joico K-PAK Protective Hairspray

Color note: Subtle balayage highlights are the perfect way to give brunette color soft, subtle dimension says George. “Avoid stripe-y, high contrast looks on this hair,” he adds.

COLOR TRENDS

Sofia Vergara

Joico’s Vero K-PAK Color Spokesperson Beth Minardi declared that Modern Family’s Vanessa Marano and Sofia Vergara sported the best brunette shades of the evening.

“Vanessa’s color was a dramatic rich brunette—not too dark and nicely done,” says Beth. “Sofia’s soft, light brown and romantic style complemented her dress and her eyes and complexion beautifully.”

In the blonde category, Beth picked Laura Linney’s buttery hue and Claire Danes’ frosty, bombshell shade as the best-in-show.

“My favorite of the night, as always, was Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks,” Beth says. “Her red is perfect—it works with her skin tone, it’s vibrant, but not trashy. It’s perfect for her length and style.”

For Joico Vero K-PAK Color International Artistic Director Sue Pemberton, the sparkling blonde sported by Rachael Taylor and the balayaged highlights that enlivened Minka Kelly’s coffee bean brown were the haircolor standouts of the night. “Both of those Angels had great color!” says Sue.

EMMY STYLES THAT MISSED

The glam squad agreed that while show host Jane Lynch exhibited emceeing skills that earned her an “A plus,” her hairstyle fell short. “She didn’t look like she did anything special for the occasion,” comments Anthony. Agrees Beth, “Her hair wasn’t messy enough to be sexy or structured enough to be clean. Choose one!”

Another star who disappointed was the usually impeccable Gwyneth Paltrow. “Her hair was really underdone,” says Anthony. It was nothing special. The same could be said for Lea Michele.” And George labels Julianna Margulies’ stiff updo as a red carpet “don’t.” Concludes Damien, “The Emmys aren’t the Academy Awards, so it’s ok to be a bit more casual, but it’s still important to look polished and chic on such a special evening.”
