Made-to-Order

Kris Sorbie turns artistic ability into profitability.

Touting the benefits of bespoke - made-to-order designs - Kris Sorbie, Redken Global Artistic Director of Color and President of Kris Sorbie LLC, talks about building and retaining your clientele via a customized approach to color services.

“I was just in a beautiful salon in Dixon, Illinois, a tiny town that’s two hours outside of Chicago,” Sorbie beams. “I spent two days there, teaching long-hair and custom-color classes one day and then having staff members integrate what they learned into their services the next day.

“By custom, I don’t mean ‘outlandish’ in any sense of the word,” Sorbie continues. “One triangle of lighter color at the crown can add the illusion of more fullness; a base that’s two shades darker than the shafts and ends can visually plump-up thin areas; a blink of light where the hair falls over one eye can exude subtle sexuality; and so much more. Even though staff members informed me on Sunday that their clients were more conservative and slow to change, on Monday, all clients walked out of the salon with tailor-made color designs and smiles on their faces!’’

To successfully accomplish custom-color designs that address clients’ concerns and desires, Sorbie advises that stylists should keep them in the know at all times. “If you don’t make clients aware that you’re doing custom designs, they may not realize the specialness of your services,” she says. “Once informed, though, they will not be only impressed by your dedication and creativity, they’ll also be far more apt to tell their friends about how wonderful you are! As your referrals start rolling in, you need to offer all clients — new and old — one-of-a-kind color services that speak to their personalities and lifestyles, as well as to help remedy their hair conces.”
