The Brightest Stars

Master colorist George Papanikolas spots winning hues on Charlize Theron, Salma Hayek and Sofia Vergara.

Beyond extraordinary talent and beauty, vivid color brought the 2012 Golden Globe Awards event to life. Beyond the bold Red Carpet, A-listers' elaborate gowns reflected a wide palette of colors, and the haircolor was, indeed, topnotch. Of course, all of the stars shined brightly, but Joico celebrity colorist George Papanikolas points to three Hollywood beauties that truly dazzled.

He says Charlize Theron's "Gatsby-style" headband brought some extra sparkle to this A-lister's head-turning creamy blonde hue. "This was my favorite Red Carpet look," reveals Papanikolas. To achieve this hot hue, lighten the regrowth area one level and then create ivory highlights throughout the head with particular emphasis on the face-frame area. Then tone with a light ash blonde demi-permanent shade.

A dramatic ombré is what made Salma Hayek even more luminous. "I loved the way this modern ombré effect contrasted with Salma Hayak's Hollywood bombshell waves," says Papanikolas. To get the look, Papanikolas suggests creating a rich brown base, then backcombing horizontal sections and creating foil highlights in the non-backcombed sections. After processing, he suggests toning with a light brown demi-permanent shade.

Winning Formulas:
Base: Joico Vero K-PAK Color ½ 5N + ½ 5A + 20 volume developer

Toner: Joico Vero K-PAK Chrome ½ N6 + ½ N8 + activator

Papanikolas says that sexy Modern Family star Sofia Vergara is a perfect example of how a brunette can wear a lighter shade that flatters an olive skin tone. To get the look, the master colorist suggests creating a chocolately, shiny base color with a medium brown demi-permanent formula. Then create large horizontal sections, backcomb each one and highlight the midshafts and ends to a golden blonde. Finally, tone all strands with a sandy blonde demi-permanent shade.
