Lady Gaga, Julia Roberts and More Celebrities Opt NOT to Have Cosmetic Surgery

NJ Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Brian Glatt

As Lady Gaga sings in her hit single, “I’m on the right track baby, I was bo this way.” Many A-list celebrities were bo with cosmetic “flaws” they have not elected to fix. One would not normally think that a Victoria’s Secret Supermodel would be virtually missing her belly button but Karolina Kurkova is! Does one typically think of a Hollywood leading man having “Dumbo” ears, Will Smith does! Does a “Pretty Woman” have one of the widest mouths most of us have seen, Julia Roberts does!

Although there is much ado about Hollywood and cosmetic surgery, the celebrities featured below have been content to work with what genetics gave them and they are still at the top of their professional game. For those who are curious, NJ Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Brian Glatt gives us the clinical name for these “imperfections” and the surgical options that are open to those who do wish to have them fixed.

*** Dr. Glatt has not treated or consulted with the celebrities featured below, nor is he suggesting that they seek plastic surgery.

Karolina Kurkova Celebrity: Karolina Kurkova

Unusual Feature: Missing Belly Button

A Victoria's Secret model is supposed to be a picture of perfection. But when you look at pictures of Karolina Kurkova, her belly button is often photo shopped. Kurkova lost her navel as a result of an operation when she was younger.

Surgical Option: Dr. Glatt explains that, “She likely lost her belly button as a result of umbilical heia surgery as a child. This is a highly unusual complication of surgery and very rarely seen. Her belly button could be surgically revised to create more depth and a more defined area. This would require a small scar around her belly button, but these are usually well hidden within the belly button itself and hard to identify.”

Owen Wilson Celebrity: Owen Wilson

Body Part: Nose

Abnormality: Crooked

Surgical Option: Dr. Glatt explains that, “Owen Wilson has a significant nasal deformity which almost definitely occurred as a result of trauma at some point in his life. His nose has marked contour irregularities and points to the right side of his face!

An extensive rhinoplasty would be required to correct his nose; however this would definitely change a characteristic element of his look (Remember Jennifer Grey?).”

John Stewart Celebrity: John Stewart

Body Part: Eyebrows

Surgical Option

Dr. Glatt explains that, “John Stewart’s eyebrows are “offset” at the outer aspect. His left side appears worse than his right, and on initial examination he may have had a laceration as a child of which the scar may have caused a “step-off” within the hair of his eyebrow.

Given that it seems to be present on both sides though, it is probably just how he developed. Laser hair removal would do the trick and would likely really improve his appearance.”

Quentin Tarantino Celebrity: Quentin Tarantino

Body Part: Forehead

Surgical Option

“He has what we call “frontal bossing” which is when men have overdeveloped bony growth of the skull under the brows leading to a “caveman” type look. Surgery to correct this involves shaving down the bone; however it can result in dramatic “feminization” of someone’s face.

As a matter of fact, this procedure is quite popular within the transsexual community to make males appear more feminine looking. I doubt Quentin would be interested.”

Julia Roberts Celebrity: Julia Roberts

Abnormality: Mammoth Mouth

Julia has one of the widest smiles anyone has ever seen and her mouth appears almost out of proportion with the rest of her face.

Dr. Glatt says, “There are not many surgical options to change this.” Fortunately for Julia this has not hurt her box office appeal one bit.

Edward James Olmos Celebrity: Edward James Olmos

Body Part: Face

Abnormality: Pockmarked

Dr. Glatt points out that, “Edwards James Olmos, (similar to Seal), has horrible pockmarked skin and extensive irregularities of the surface. In his case, it may have been from acne scarring as a child.

Correction of this is multi-factorial and difficult – it involves careful and skillful use of fillers (such as Juvederm or Sculptra) as well as intensive skin resurfacing for the surface of the skin consisting of dermabrasion.”

Forest Whitaker Celebrity: Forest Whitaker

Body Part: Eyelids

Abnormality: Droopy

Forest Whitaker has a classic case of ptosis (pronounced “toe-sis”) which is a fancy term for a droopy eye. This can be congenital or develop later in life from trauma or age. It involves weakening of the tiny muscle which holds the eye open automatically.

Repair of this is quite straightforward and involves repair of or tightening of the muscle involved to lift up the resting shape of the eyelid to open the eye back up. People with this condition usually do suffer from some compromise of their eyesight, so it is interesting that he has never gotten this fixed!

Will Smith Celebrity: Will Smith

Body Part: Ears

Abnormality: Elephantine

Will Smith, along with our president, has protruding ears. Will Smith also has some deformity of the upper edge of his ear where they did not develop normally. The cartilage simply develops in a misshapen way and without a true fold in the top of the ears causing them to stick out.

Dr. Glatt states that, “An otoplasty, or ear pinning procedure can easily be done, even in adults, and the results are satisfying and dramatic. The scar is well hidden in the crease behind the ear where the ear meets the skull and the repair involves placing sutures within the cartilage to fold and shape it more naturally.”

Rumer Willis Celebrity: Rumer Willis

Body Part: Gigantic chin

Dr. Glatt concedes that, “Rumer Willis unfortunately got her father’s lower face and chin – it is wide and thick, but mostly the lower part of her face is taller and longer than the rest of her face, making this feature seem immediately apparent as it is so out of proportion to the rest of her face.

She literally is Demi from the lips up and Bruce from the lips down. This best way to correct this is with jaw surgery to shave down and resculpt her lower jaw. This surgery is extensive and can profoundly change how someone looks.”
