HAIRSTYLE COLLECTIONS
Using everything from green screen to cardboard blocks and toilet paper cores, Matrix Artistic Directors Brian and Sandra Smith bring their shapely beauty masterpiece to life.
“We used human and synthetic hair to create the individual pieces,” Brian informs. “The faux hair made it particularly diffi cult to create smooth, precise shapes. It took weeks of our time, but thanks to plenty of patience, it all came together perfectly.” Sandra adds, “We’re especially proud of the fact that very little Photoshop was done to the images, making them true works of hair art!”

Jackie Rinehard, Education Leader at Paul Mitchell the school Chicago and Jean Sweet, photographer and editorial stylist, had a great notion: Start a photo club for the school’s future professionals.
Meeting once a month after school hours and receiving lessons on every aspect of photo shoots, seven dedicated students realized four months of hard work with Mod Geisha, a delight for the eyes and an astounding accomplishment in terms of student workmanship.
Kudos for this collection also go to the Learning Leader team: Lauren Evans, Mandi Schneider, Jessica Tiddes, Lena Torres, and Ariel Griglin, who helped to develop the concept and oversaw practice sessions and the photo shoot.

“You have no idea how much this win means to me,” gushes Dallan Flint, a stylist and freelance teacher for Taylor Andrews Academy in Salt Lake City.
“Since becoming a stylist 12 years ago, HOT is the fi rst major publication to feature my work and VisionHair is the fi rst major recognition of my artistry.”
Photographer: Zuzanna Audette;
Hairstylist: Dallan Flint;
Makeup Artist: Sherri Curtis;
Models: (white hair) Bailee MyKell Cowperthwaite; (red hair) Kenzie Hansen; (brown and black hair) Mary Ann Cruz-Home for Taylor Andrews Academy
Flint’s inspiration and story behind his winning collection, Creatures of the Night, is not only original, but also compelling.
“In spring 2011, I was so impressed by all the feathers that were shown on the runway,” Flint reveals.
“That led me to imagine what it would be like to create a collection around owls–gorgeous night creatures that have so many interesting feather patterns and designs.
My model with the voluminous blonde hair is a nod to the snowy owl; the redhead’s design represents a nest; and the brunette’s hair is an abstract interpretation of a tree bathed in moonlight.”
Flint goes on to say that his idol, Nicholas French, has inspired his creativity for many years.
“Aside from having amazing hair skills, one of Nick’s takeaway lessons is that having a successful, high-profi le career takes years of hard work
to achieve,” says Flint.
“Moving forward, I want to continue teaching beauty school students about all the awesome possibilities that are available to them as licensed stylists.
As an artist, my ultimate goal is to one day become a sought-after, high-profile editorial stylist. For the moment, though, I love the over-the-moon feeling of being HOT’s 2012 VisionHair winner!”
