Caitlin Charles-DeGarmo

Collection: Charbon

Salon: Eric Fisher Salon, Wichita, Kan.

Category: Newcomer Hairstylist of the Year

Photographer: Eric Fisher

Inspiration: "I ran across a few different things that I drew inspiration from," says Caitlin Charles-DeGarmo. First, a portrait by photographer Thomas Lavelle just stuck with me. The girl in the portrait had skin that had been blacked out and clothing that was black and it reminded me of the Victorian era. Lastly, surrounded by all of this black, she had bright blue striking eyes. Armed with this image and the idea of a gorgeous girl in Victorian clothes walking through a coal mine, I begin to work on my collection."

Bio: Born and raised in Wichita, Kan., Caitlin Charles-DeGarmo attended Eric Fisher Academy. "During my time at EFA I was exposed to all the opportunities this industry has to offer. I was also fortunate enough to meet my hair hero, Ann Bray, whose work inspired my first NAHA collection and established me as a 2011 student finalist. The work of Eric Fisher, Ann Bray and many others continue to inspire me every day," concludes Charles-DeGarmo.

NAHA 2013 Winner!
Jeremy McDougle

Collection: Ibaraki

Salon: Lunatic Fringe, Salt Lake City, Utah

Category: Newcomer Hairstylist of the Year

Photographer: Eric Fisher

Inspiration: McDougle collaborated with a make-up artist, who visited the city of Ibaraki, which boasts a beautiful flower garden by the ocean. "We tried to come up with images that had elegance and beauty, but movement as well," says McDougle.

Bio: Upon graduating from Paul Mitchell the School in Colorado Springs, Colo., McDougle began a career at Lunatic Fringe. His career was inspired while he was doing a stint as a janitor at the Paul Mitchell the School and his passion for the industry sparked from that experience. "I love creating, working with people and the artistic freedom it offers," says McDougle. "I've always loved art, but never had a way of expressing it. That's what hairdressing has given me-an outlet to express."
