Some old wives’ tales just aren’t true. Personal stress doesn’t cause hair to gray, but cellular stress does, according to a recent study by Emi Nishimura of Tokyo Medical and Dental University. How? DNA is under constant attack by damaging chemicals, ultraviolet light and radiation. “A single cell can encounter up to 100,000 events a day that damage DNA,” Nishimura reveals. “The stem cells within hair follicles that are responsible for color are the most impacted by this irreparable DNA weathering.”
