Manscaping

The era of a man's hairy chest being considered sexy is long gone. The only question nowadays is, how bare do you want your man to be?

Manscaping encompasses a lot of territory—literally. He could have hairy shoulders, back, chest or ears, or even a shag rug below the belt. Whatever the case may be, there’s a solution for his woolly dilemma.

Waxing Is for Pros

First, we have to say: Don’t attempt his hair removal at home. It takes skill and extreme hygiene to create professional, injury-free results. Did we say injury? You betcha. If the wax is too hot, improperly applied or the removal process requires a second pass, you could remove a layer of skin.

Note: Shaving should never be done to remove unwanted hair. In two or three days, his smooth skin will tu into a prickly cactus and there’s a definite possibility he will develop a bad case of ingrown hairs.

Waxing is the most common way to remove hair and for a good reason: It’s safe when done by an experienced esthetician, it'll keep excess hair at bay for up to a month, and his skin will actually feel softer to the touch. Of course, these wonderful results also come with a price: a little (or a lot) of pain.

How to Minimize the “Owww!” Effect

Always solicit referrals from your hairdresser. Make it clear that you’re looking for a beauty professional who specializes in men and is skilled at minimizing discomfort.

Ask the chosen esthetician if he or she trims the hair before waxing. This is huge because long hair is much more painful to remove. If he or she doesn’t routinely do this, you should find another esthetician who does.

If his first time on the waxing table is too painful—regardless of receiving an expert waxing—many estheticians will recommend a numbing crème that can be applied 45 minutes before the service.

Additionally, there are tricks to male waxing that only an esthetician who’s experienced in stripping the male sex of unwanted hair knows how to do, including waxing different growth pattes, feathering hair left behind so the waxed area doesn’t end abruptly; how to gently remove shaggy nose and ear hairs; and which wax to use on different areas of the body.

Make sure that his esthetician gives him pre-waxing and post-waxing instructions to help avoid skin reactions, better results and little or no problems with ingrown hairs and irritated follicles.

After the Deed is Done

Let him know that the first waxing service is usually the hardest, especially if he’s having his chest or jewels exfoliated.

Assure him that by having waxing services at monthly intervals, they’ll require less time, eventually be less painful and, in most cases, result in less post-service skin sensitivity.

Make a fuss over how good he looks. Positive reinforcement is a sure-fire way to keep his skin bare and sexy!
