Dark Matters: Fall Lipstick Tips

Dark lipstick is a Fall staple for good reason: it adds instant drama. But how do you choose which shade will work best for you? And how do you apply to make sure it won't be gone by breakfast? So many questions...and we've got the answers!

Choose Your Shade

The general rule of thumb here is to go by your eye color. If you have light eyes, choose a pink based shade. Dark eyed beauties, stick to your wheelhouse. A shade with a brown base will bring out your eye color even more. Blue based shades tend to be flattering on just about everyone, just keep in mind that the darker the hue, the higher the drama-level.

Make it Last

A quick tip to making sure your pretty pout stays put is to apply a thin layer of foundation to your lips before applying your chosen stick, stain or crayon. Let the foundation soak in for a few seconds before applying your color. The foundation will "grab" your lipcolor and help it stay put. For a more defined lip, choose a closely matching lip pencil and lightly line the outside edges of your pout. Not only will it create a more dramatic look, but lipliner keeps your color from bleeding. If you're going for a more casual dark lip, try a lipliner that closely matches your skin tone. All the staying power, with a less defined shape.

Tie it All Together

If your looking to full-on embraced dark lipped drama, then go for that smoky eye! (NOTE: this works best for evening looks) On the other hand, if you want your pout to be the main focus, then keep everything else light and natural. Line your eye with a soft brown powder as opposed to a liquid or pencil and keep the blush light.

One More Lip Tip

There is more than one way to pull off a dark lip. Even during the cooler months, when dramatic lips are at their most popular, they can be a bit much during the day. Instead of banishing your berries and burgundies to your evening clutch, try dabbing your lipstick and blending with your finger. This will add a subtle stained look as opposted to an all over lacquered finish.
